'They're waiting for people to die':
Texas’ decade long waitlists for disability services are getting longer and dangerous

Nearly 160,000 disabled Texans are suffering setbacks while they wait on decades-long waitlists to access Medicaid waivers needed to afford and access important services. The Carters have been waiting for nearly a decade to get a waiver for their daughter, Nola. Texas is legally obligated, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, to provide services for disabled residents like Nola. Since 2021, nearly 3,000 applicants have died while waiting for a waiver.
